The announcement of India's first bullet train on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, about which TOI had carried an exclusive report in its July 8 edition, generated much excitement on Tuesday, as did the inclusion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Mumbai-Goa routes on the semi-high speed corridors, which will have trains running at 160-200 km per hour.
In keeping with existing plans, railway minister Sadanand Gowda announced that the city's local train network would get 72 rakes in phases in the next two years. The railway board has sanctioned Rs 373 crore for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project II, with all the money to be utilized for ongoing projects, and has announced surveys for proposed corridors including the CST-Panvel fast corridor, the Panvel-Diva-Virar corridor and the Thane-Navi Mumbai airport corridor.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has carried out a pre-feasibility study for the CST-Panvel corridor. The announcement about a survey for a Thane-Navi Mumbai airport corridor is new. Long-distance commuters would also have access to free Wi-Fi at six stations in the city as the budget said the service would be available at all A1 and A category stations across India.
