MUMBAI: The city crime branch probing objectionable posts on Chhatrapati Shivaji and late Sena chief Bal Thackeray that led to violent protests, got approval from the Centre to send Letter Rogatory to the US to get information from Facebook. The cyber crime investigation cell had traced the IP addresses of the computers to Saudi Arabia and Romania.

The cyber crime investigation cell, which took over the probe into the objectionable pictures of warrior king Shivaji and late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray posted on Facebook, traced the IP addresses of the computers to Saudi Arabia and Romania., said sources.

On May 31, the Mulund police had registered an offence against unknown persons under various sections of the IT Act and the IPC. The probe into the controversial posts was immediately taken over by the Mumbai cyber crime cell.

An IT professional was bludgeoned to death and a few others injured after members of a Hindutva outfit went on the rampage in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on May 31 and June 1.
