The Criminal Intelligence unit (CIU) on July 10 laid a trap and arrested three persons — Mukesh Ghag, Eknath Ghadge and Qasim Qureshi for demanding Rs 15 crore from S D corporation for letting work go on without hassles at the firm's MP Mill compound at Tardeo project. Police are now probing whether Qasim who is a habitual offender was taking orders on behest of some rival builder cum politician. Interestingly Qasim Qureshi, one of the three is the same person who had in 2007 allegedly in connivance with some cops, framed builder Rajendra Chaturvedi in an attempt to murder incident earlier.
"We have collected the voice samples of the calls the accused had made for demanding the extortion sum and have send for forensic science Laboratory for examination. We have also looking as to who had given threatening calls on behest of Qasim for extortion," said crime branch officer.
Shapoorji Palanji has undertaken two slum redevelopment schemes at Tardeo, where 1,700 residents have been rehabilitated. It is yet to provide accommodation to 138 families. Cops said the accused were eligible for accommodation at the project, but continued to create hassles despite being provided alternative accommodation. The accused misled other residents and in turn threatened builder and demanded money.
When builder refused to pay up, the builder started receiving calls from international phone numbers.
