Alwar and his friends from the neighbourhood, Rocky Gomes (20), Aditya Fernandes (17), Andrew Durendar (19) and Anthony Raju (23), got together for a small party at Goregaon. "They all got drunk. One of them suggested they should go to Versova beach for a stroll. The group reached the beach around 11pm," said an officer from the Versova police station.
At the beach, Alwar and another friend entered the water, while the other three waited near the shore. By then, the lifeguard had already left as it was late in the night. "Alwar and his friend started swimming. Minutes later, his friend came out and warned Alwar to stay close to the shore as the sea was getting rough," said the officer.
Paying no heed to the warnings, Alwar continued to swim but shortly, he found it difficult to stay afloat, the police said. As he called out for help, his friends rushed to local fishermen to help them rescue Alwar. But before they could do anything, Alwar was swept away, said the police, adding that the fishermen could not even spot him.
The group alerted the Versova police summoned the fire brigade. A search operation was launched but in vain. His body was washed ashore around 6.30am on Sunday.
The authorities have been requesting visitors not to enter the sea during high tide, especially if they are drunk. The Versova police have decided to step up patrolling on the beach, especially on weekends.
