Despite rain, not much rise in lake levels

MUMBAI: Relentless showers drenched the city on Sunday but the lakes supplying water to Mumbai received varying amounts of rainfall, which did little to increase the stock levels.

The five lakes together received an average of 80mm rain on Sunday, and the total stock now would roughly add to another 25 days of water supply, said an officer. Water stock in all the lakes, which stood at 92,000 million litre on Saturday, rose to 95,443 million litre on Sunday. While Vihar, Tulsi and Upper Vaitarna recorded 80mm rainfall, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Vatsa got a mere 17-24mm.

But the city has already received nearly 37% of the season's total rainfall. "We have forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.

The catchment areas too have been getting good rainfall and should continue to do so," said V K Rajeev, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai.
