The criminal intelligence unit (CIU) on Thursday arrested Mukesh Ghag, Eknath Ghadge and Qasim Qureshi who demanded Rs 15 crores from construction group Shapoorji Palanji for carrying out work at its Tardeo project without any hassles. They were produced before a local court and remanded in police custody till July 15.
Shapoorji Palanji has undertaken projects including two under slum redevelopment schemes at Tardeo in which 1,700 residents have been rehabilitated. They are yet to provide accommodation to 138 families. Police said that the trio were eligible for accommodation in the project but continued creating hassles despite being provided alternate accommodation. "They misled the residents, and also sought irrelevant information under the Right to Information act," an official said.
"Whenever site supervisor Satish Hegde visited the site, the trio gathered there along with few residents and stopped the work. The accused contacted project manager Mukesh Waghela and threatened to kill him if the company failed to agree to their demands. When Waghela met them, they trio demanded Rs 15 crores," said an officer. Later Waghela started receiving international calls from underworld elements asking to settle with Qasim. The company officials suspects that a rival builder could have instigated Qasim.
The company approached Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria. Maria handed over the investigations to the CIU. The CIU officials scanned the CCTV footages that shows Qasim regularly visiting the company office and haggling for money. "After the demand was verified the CIU team on Thursday evening laid a trap and arrested trio when they arrived to accept the first installment of Rs 1 crore," added police official.
Qasim has links with gangster Chhota Rajan and had framed builder Chaturvedi in a fake attempt to murder case.
"In a bid to extort, the accused were even giving false complaints, misusing the information under RTI act and misguiding and inciting the local slum dwellers and tenants with the ulterior motive using name of Chhota Rajan. They threatened Dilip Thacker director of S D corporation with dire consequences," said Mukesh Waghela, project manager.
