MUMBAI: A constable driving a police jeep lost control of the vehicle and rammed it into the shutters of three shops in Vasai (west) early Sunday. No one was injured.
The constable identified as Santosh Pardeshi of the Vasaigaon police station was driving the Bolero jeep. He was accompanied by another constable. They were heading to Parnaka in Vasai (west) to pick up their colleagues who were waiting there to carry out a raid on illegal Bangladeshis. Though no medical test was conducted on Pardeshi, police said that he was not drunk.
According to inspector Maheshwar Reddy, "the constable tried to save a dog that was in the middle of the road. He lost control of the vehicle which hit the shutters of a few shops." Reddy said that his vehicle was behind the Bolero when the accident occurred. The vehicle suffered damages on the right side. The shutters of three shops —a plastic, shoe and medical— were damaged. Reddy said that Pardeshi did not smell of alcohol when the accident occurred.
"The constable was with me since Saturday night for the raid, I can assure he was not drunk," asserted Reddy. Thane rural additional superintendent of police Sangramsinh Nishandar said that medical tests in accident cases are done only when the driver is found to be reeling under alcohol and that no special treatment was given to Pardeshi.
A case under the Motor Vehicles Act has been registered with the Vasaigaon police. Reddy said that after investigation a FIR will be filed. No arrest has been made.
