GRP escort missed ladies’ coach of Bhayander local as he was late

MUMBAI: The attack on Apurva Medda (25) once again highlights the lack of adequate security for women travellers on trains.

At 4.55 am, five minutes after she boarded the local at Bhayander, her assailant got into her compartment from Mira Road.

"She heard a sound and turned around, only to get whacked on the forehead with a foot-long stick the man had. Medda screamed, but her attacker continued to hit her. He snatched her gold chain, bangles and anklets," said a senior GRP officer.

As the train slowed down before Dahisar station around 5am, the man jumped onto the tracks and escaped. Medda, bleeding and in shock, got off at Dahisar station. She was taken to a hospital in Borivli by GRP personnel and given four stitches.

"The local originated from Bhayander. A GRP escort tried to board it at Mira Road, but could not reach the door of the ladies' compartment in time," said DCP Deepak Devraj.

The accused is probably new to crime as he dropped his stick and Medda's chain, pendant and anklet in the coach while fleeing. The GRP recovered the valuables and the stick.

Medda described the accused as 5'6'' tall, 35-40 years old and with a wheatish complexion. Her husband, Dipen, told TOI that she was in shock and pain because of her injuries.

The GRP's failure to live up to its own commitment to station personnel in women's coaches and protect commuters is as shocking as this crime. Mumbai is very different in two ways: one, it's a city on the move from before morning to after midnight; and, two, it's much more dependent on trains to get from one place to another than any other Indian city. So the city's safety-security index is a direct measure of how safe its citizens feel on trains. This incident is one more dent in the city's reputation of being safer for women than other Indian cities.
