Final decks cleared for Mumbai Metro’s commercial run

MUMBAI: Mumbaikars may soon be able to travel on the much-awaited Metro service as the railway board has given the final approval for the rolling stock—this includes coaches of a rake to be used—for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. The state government is also expected to decide soon on the demand for a fare hike by the operator Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL), clearing the way for commercial runs.

MP Kirit Somaiya, who had been pursuing the matter with railway ministry, said, "The final approval was given today (June 5). This paves the way for authorities to start commercial operations."

MMRDA's metropolitan commissioner UPS Madan confirmed that the permissions were received on Thursday.

Earlier, MMOPL had declared that it will open the service within seven days from the date of the final approval. While MMOPL has demanded a minimum and maximum fare of Rs 10 and Rs 40 for the 12-km corridor, the state government has not yet accepted the proposed fare, even though MMOPL has produced a letter from the Union urban development ministry which states that the operator has the power to fix the initial fare.
