NAVI MUMBAI: The chief officer of Panvel Municipal Council (PMC), Sudhakar Jagtap (45) was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau along with an accountant Yunus Bedekar (57) for demanding a bribe of Rs 45,000 from a citizen.

The affected person had complained to the Navi Mumbai wing of ACB about the bribe demand of Rs 45,000, which after a bit of bargaining was brought down to Rs 30,000. On Tuesday afternoon, the accountant of PMC, Bedekar, was nabbed red-handed accepting the marked currency notes as bribe from the citizen inside the PMC main office in Panvel.

Later, Jagtap was picked up by the ACB from his residence today.

The complainant is a contractor of PMC who had been struggling to clear and encash his pending dues and bills for the various works he had done for the civic body. However, the accountant and also Jagtap demanded the bribe amount to clear his bills worth over Rs 2.5 lakh,'' informed an ACB official.

Both Jagtap and Bedekar are currently in police custody.
