MUMBAI: Residents of Campa Cola society in Worli on Sunday evening said they will allow the BMC to cut power, water and gas connections to the illegal flats in the compound, a major climbdown after resisting civic and police teams for three days.

The decision comes after a delegation of residents led by MNS MLA Bala Nandgaonkar met the chief minister after the BMC gave them an ultimatum to let its teams in or face force. The residents, speaking to the media, said the chief minister assured them that he will favourably consider their future plans for redevelopment of the buildings.

The BMC teams will move into the compound on Monday.

The civic body wants to demolish the flats as directed by the Supreme Court, and wants to start by cutting utility services. The residents said that they are taking the step so they don't want to be in contempt of the Supreme Court. The BMC has been recording the residents' resistance and has said it will submit the clips to the apex court. The residents had given an undertaking to the apex court that they will vacate the flats by May 31.

BMC wants to disconnect water, electricity and piped gas connections, the initial phase of the demolition ordered by the Supreme Court. But residents have resisted for three days, barricading the gates of the compound and holding havans to hold off the civic officials.

On Sunday, the BMC officials finally talked tough. "The cost of demolition, the cost of manpower, officials per day expenses will be billed to the residents," said deputy municipal commissioner Anand Waghralkar, while giving the residents 30 minutes to think it over.

A couple of residents collapsed as tension peaked, and had to be rushed to hospital.

The residents earlier said they had drafted a letter to the President to intervene but legal experts said there was no such provision available under law.
