Helpline for power faults during monsoon in island city

MUMBAI: The BEST has announced a helpline for those facing power cuts/interruptions this monsoon. You can lodge complaint on 22843939 and expect the power wing staff to redress the issue at the earliest.

"You need to give your consumer number while lodging the complaint," said a senior official from the electricity wing. He further stated that the BEST is equipped with vans which can rush to the site and restore electricity at the earliest. "Every complaint will be treated serious — be it from anywhere between Colaba and Mahim," he said.

BEST spokesperson, Hanumant Gophane, said that the power undertaking may, in the interest of citizen safety, be compelled to switch off the supply in certain areas to avoid danger to the installation by flood water. "This will be done as a temporary measure and only in emergency situations," he stated.

The BEST on Thursday also released a list of Dos and Donts to avoid electric shocks and power interruptions during monsoon which are as follows:

* Protect the meter cabin from rain water by way of plastering and raising the height of the cabin.

* Get the electrical wiring — right from the meter position to individual flat premises — and the internal wiring thoroughly checked through licenced electrical contractor.

* Switch "Off" the main switch in premises and cabin in case of water logging and switch "On" only when it is attended to and installation is checked by licenced electrical contractor or BEST staff.

* Inform BEST control centre/helpline in case of sparks or shock in meter cabins, street lighting poles or distribution pillars/junction boxes.

* In case of water leakages, don't touch the installation with bare or moist hands or without taking safety measures such as hand gloves, wooden/insulated platforms, etc.

* Restrict your load when temporary supply is given to your building or installations.
