The industry is experiencing a sharp rise in text messaging , smartphone purchases and mobile advertising. While location-based services, social networking application, mobile-commerce , context-aware service, object recognition, instant messaging and mobile payments or money transfers are picking up, social games apps on mobile devices are among the most popular.
"Today, there are over 10 lakh applications in the Android play store. However, there are still plenty of opportunities in the mobile applications market. Students can look at being entrepreneurs which allows a creative freehand ," said Manas Gajare, founder, Zabuza Labs.
STARTING OUT
Since mobile applications are based on the IT platform, developers should have a BTech (computer application) or MCA degree with experience of working with gateways /servers (WAP, XML, VXML, WTA, etc), browsers (WML, XHTML), clients (SMS, e-mail , chat etc), and stacks (WAP2.0 and TCP/IP).
The industry also requires product and content creators who could be experienced graphics designers, content writers or researchers. One has to decide on functionality of an application, design user interface, develop codes, test it and then publish it.
CAREER PROSPECTS
The mobile application market is gaining popularity. "Besides mobile applications created for individual users, there are IT companies which make enterprise applications," said Gajare. Remuneration depends on the popularity of the applications developed. "The paybacks depend on how the application performs in the market. If it is a paid application , it depends on the number of downloads. In terms of free applications, remuneration depends on the advertisements that one can attract," he said.
