Mumbai: Posing as insurance agents, four people gained entry to a flat in a housing society in Chinchpokli on Friday after. Once inside, they assaulted the housewife with a grinding stone and fled with gold ornaments and cash worth Rs 6 lakh.

The incident took place around 2.30pm, but it came to light around 5pm when victim Sushma Surve's neighbour Harshala Patil went to her house and found the door ajar. She then saw the victim lying unconscious with blood all around. Harshala called her mother, who alerted the police and rushed Sushma (34) to KEM hospital.

During the preliminary probe, Sushma told the police that four men had knocked on her first-floor flat door at Sankalp building, posing as car insurance agents. "The accused said they needed her signature and she allowed them in. One of them asked for water and when she went in, they bolted the door and hit her. They tied her up and robbed valuables," said an officer of Kalachowkie police. Cops said the circumstances point to a rivalry rather than a robbery. "The accused told Sushma they had come earlier too, but didn't get a chance to enter the flat. We are making enquiries with Sushma's husband who works as a security manager for a security firm in Bhandup. It could be a professional rivalry," said senior inspector Bhausaheb Gite.
