The police said the husband or the wife might have caused the leakage following a fight. The spare cooking gas cylinder was in the bedroom and the regulator was found switched on.
The charred bodies of Shailesh Dekne (39), his wife Pratibha (37) and son Ladesh, were found in the bedroom of their second floor flat, B-23, at Manish Cooperative Housing Society in Virar (W). The bedroom was gutted.
Residents told the police that the couple often fought as Shailesh was an alcoholic.
The explosion was said to have occurred around 3 am. On hearing the sound, neighbours stepped out and saw the flat on fire. They informed the fire brigade.
The old building had few residents. The Deknes had been living in the apartment since 2006.
While Shailesh worked in a private firm in Valiv, Pratibha was a housewife. Neighbours told the police that the couple had fought on Thursday night.
The kitchen was not affected in the explosion. The cylinder in the kitchen did not have a regulator, raising the suspicion that the explosion was either a suicide attempt or a murder, said the police.
The police registered a case of accidental death. The bodies were taken to the Virar primary health centre for post-mortem.
The police said theywould wait for for the fire brigade report before further inquiry.
