On May 20, 2012, the police raid on the premises found people consuming drugs at a party. Investigations based on medical tests established that 86 participants had consumed drugs.
The police submitted a chargesheet against 56 people who attended the party. Oakwood owner Vishay Handa was arrested under the NDPS Act for "letting out his premises for a drug party". Handa, who had sent out the invitations and was present at the party, got bail.
The police in an April 9 order said that it was doubtful that the management would comply with the law in future.
Zillion Hotels Pvt Ltd, which had entrusted Oakwood to run the serviced apartments, filed an appeal with the home department against the order. The management requires several licences, including one from the police to serve liquor and function as a boarding house.
The appeal filed by the management says that the status of the solitary case registered is still pending and hence no adverse inference could have been drawn against it.
The appeal details a series of actions initiated by the BMC and the police that denied the establishment a public performance licence on various grounds before the drug seizure. The matter was kept in abeyance when the drug seizure happened.
