Boy survives after contact with live wire

MUMBAI: A six-year-old boy could have died of electrocution if a senior police officer would have not noticed him while passing from the spot of incident on Saturday. The incident occurred on 60-feet road at Kamala Nagar locality in Dharavi around 9.30pm when the boy identified as Rajesh Shetty while playing went closer to the air-conditioning unit of a private bank ATM kiosk and came in contact with a live wire, said the Shahu Nagar police.

Locals who witnessed the incident remained a mere spectator while Shetty was thrown to a short distance due to the impact after touching the livewire of the AC unit. At the time of going to press, the police have pressed charges against the contractor under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 337 (endangering life) of the IPC. Probably the contractor will be arrested on Sunday.

The locals told the police that the boy was playing when he suddenly ran to the backside of the ATM kiosks for picking an empty water bottle. "Shetty was electrocuted when he put his hands below the AC unit to pick the bottle. The senior inspector of Shahu Nagar police station passing from the locality on seeing people gathered outside the ATM went to check and found the boy lying unconscious. He rushed the boy to Sion hospital," said deputy commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

Sion hospital doctors said Shetty could have lost his life if the police have not bought him immediately. He is recuperating the injuries suffered due to electrocution.
