MUMBAI: Two old temples in the south Indian enclave of Matunga, one them reportedly 300 years old, will reconsecrate their idols this weekend.
The Mahakumbhabhishek of the 300-year-old Shri Marubhai Gavdevi temple and the 75-year-old Sri Sankara Mutt will take place at noon on June 1 and 2. All the deities and the kumbh representingall goddesses will be refreshed with holy water by priests.
According to Vedic norms, the Mahakumbhabhishek ceremony is organised either to consecrate a new temple or reconsecrate an old one, commonly at 12-year intervals. The previous time this was done was in 2002.
S Siva Subramanian, secretary of Sankara Mutt and chairman of the Marubhai Gavdevi temple's re-consecration committee, said that the yagyashala puja, Navgraha puja, kalash puja and Vedic recitations at both shrines began on Friday, May 30.
