The Valiv police in Vasai (east) seized around 1,500 policies from Kishore Pawar (30), Dhirendra Tripathi (48) and Anand Singh (32). The matter came to light when a policy holder approached one of the insurance company's for claim, only to be told that his policy did not exist. The 'original' copy of the policy when produced before the insurance company, turned out to be fake. He registered a complaint with the police.
Following investigation, the police picked up Pawar and Tripathi, both Vasai residents. They confessed to the crime and even named Singh, a Bhayander resident as an accomplice. The police raided homes of the three suspects and seized laptops, policies, letter heads and stamps of insurance companies. The seized policies are valued at Rs 5.60 lakhs, said the police.
Investigators are ascertaining whether employees of insurance companies are involved in the racket. The police have also not ruled out an inter-state gang. The three introduced themselves as insurance agents, collected cash and gave fake insurance policies. Vehicle users hit the road without realizing that their insurance policies were fake.
The police is now contacting vehicle owners based on the seized policies. Police said unless motorists approach the insurance company for claims, they will assume that their policies are genuine.
They have been arrested under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery),467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471(using as genuine a forged document) and 34(common intent) of the Indian Penal Code and have been sent to magisterial custody till May 4 by the Vasai sessions court.
