Police nabs two fake cops in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The L T Marg police arrested two people who posed as police officials and cheated a transporter of Rs 15,000 on the pretext of frisking him for security reasons.

The two accused - Afzal Jaffery (52) and Masha Allah Kamal (29) - both resident of Thane district, were arrested by the patrolling police team of the L T Marg police station. The L T Marg police constables, in mufti, were on their patrol duty at Zaveri Bazaar, at around 9 pm when they noticed four men frisking Vijay Mishra alias Pappu (33), a transporter. The patrol team approached them and inquired what they were doing. Realizing that the real cops had arrived, two of the four suspects fled while the police patrol team nabbed Jaffery and Kamal.

The case is being investigated by assistant inspector Rahul Naik.The accused have been remanded in police custody till April 21.

During the interrogation, they admitted their crime. "Pappu told us that they had taken Rs 15,000 from him in the name of checking. While we recovered Rs 3,000 from the two arrested accused, the two wanted fled with Rs 12,000. They are also wanted in a few cases in Madhya paradesh," said Sanjeev Mandli, senior police inspector.
