According to civic sources, Shewale- who is also contesting the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from the South Central Mumbai constituency - was trying to become a standing committee chairman for the fifth time.
Shewale has been the civic standing committee chairman for four years - from 2010-11 to 2013-14. Before his tenure, his party mate Ravindra Waikar had held the position for four successive times during the period 2006-07 to 2009-10.
The standing committee is the most important committee in the civic body, which controls the financial transactions and approves all project proposals.
The choice of BMC standing committee chairman had become significant as Shiv Sena is bracing for the Lok Sabha as well as Vidhan Sabha elections this year. The BMC, which is richest civic body in the country with over Rs 31,000 crore budget, has been the main source of funds for the party, which is ruling it for last 17 years.
"I was not aware that I would be given an opportunity to head the standing committee. Party chief Uddhavji Thackeray called up at 12 noon and asked me to file my nomination," said Phanse, who has been the leader of house for last two years. Earlier he had also chaired the civic improvements as well as health committees.
