MUMBAI: Two years after more than 50 per cent female corporators were elected; women are finally on the verge of getting their expected dues in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). House leader and the improvements committee chairperson - two important posts in the civic body - are likely to go to women, thus justifying their majority in the civic body.
Though more than half members of the BMC house are from fairer sex, it is only the men who till now were calling shots in the civic proceedings. In the 227-member BMC house, there are as many as 122 women corporators, which accounts to more than half the strength. However, when it came to empowering them with authority, all political parties were found wanting. From the post of mayor to the group leaders and committee chairpersons, women corporators were given a raw deal by their parties.
However, this year is likely to bring in welcome change as far as women corporators are concerned. With Shiv Sena, the ruling party in the BMC, deciding to field outgoing standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale for Lok Sabha elections and pitching Yashodhar Phanse to replace him, the party is looking for a suitable candidate to succeed Phanse as a house leader.
There are three names -Trishna Vishwasrao, Kishori Pednekar and former mayor Shraddha Jadhav - doing the rounds in civic circles for the post of a house leader. Among them, Vishwasrao has emerged as a frontrunner.
The BJP is likely to annoint Ujjwala Modak as the chairperson of civic improvements committee. She has already headed the civic education committee.
