Phase 2: Cong-NCP on back foot in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: With the campaigning for the second phase of polling in the state for 19 Lok Sabha seats in Marathwada and Western Maharashtra ending on Tuesday, the Congress-NCP combine appeared to be demoralised in the wake of predictions that the NDA was headed for a clear majority and the sensational disclosures made by the Prime Minister's ex-media advisor Sanjay Baru and former coal secretary P C Parakh.

Though state Congress president Manikrao Thakre claimed that the Congress did not believe in such surveys and though the PMO itself has refuted Baru's claims, a BJP leader said the Congress will have to pay a heavy price in the Lok Sabha polls because of corruption at all levels and failure to take action against corrupt politicians.

"Between the first phase of polling in the state on April 10 and the second phase due on April 17, the Congress party's image has been further tarnished following the disclosures made by Baru and Parakh. Their books will have an adverse impact on the Congress's fortunes. The Congress is steadily losing its base in urban and rural areas across the state," the BJP leader said.

For the second phase, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra witnessed extensive campaigning by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, BJP prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi, BJP president Rajnath Singh, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, NCP president Sharad Pawar, MNS leader Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray.

While the BJP leaders targeted the Congress, particularly Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the CM, Pawar and Raul Gandhi came down heavily on Modi for "misleading" the people over the development of Gujarat. In fact, Rahul Gandhi alleged that there was a direct partnership between Modi and the Adani group, while Chavan and Pawar claimed that Maharashtra leads in industrial development and investment.

Among the prominent candidates in the fray are former chief minister Ashok Chavan, BJP leader Gopinath Munde, state Youth Congress president Vishwajeet Kadam, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, all-India Youth Congress president Rajeev Satao and industries minister Narayan Rane's son Neelesh.

Chavan is contesting from his hometown Nanded against BJP nominee D B Patil, while Sule is contesting from Baramati against Mahayuti nominee Mahadev Jankar and former IPS officer Suresh Khopade. Munde is contesting from Beed.

In Madha, formerly represented by Sharad Pawar, NCP has fielded former minister Vijaysinh Mohite Patil against his brother and independent candidate Pratapsinh Mohite Patil.
