MUMBAI: After a TOI report about the frequent fire issues with Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL) rakes on Tuesday, the commissioner of railway safety (CRS), central circle, decided to take up the matter with the Central Railway (CR).

BHEL rakes were introduced in 2000, but there were fire and reliability issues from the first. Of the original 14 rakes, only nine remain in service.

"I have decided to write to the CR to undertake inspection of rakes in view of repeated fires," CRS, central circle, Chetan Bakshi said.

Source said the CRS might suggest that CR withdraw one rake at a time for intensive maintenance so as not to impact the timetable.

CR runs more than 112 services every day with these rakes, which can run on both AC and DC.
