MUMBAI: The BEST buses began operating from Malad, Malvani and Goregaon depots this morning, with first set of 30 buses leaving at around 5 am and 85 buses till 6 am, officials said while indicating that there was no strike by workers.
The workers had threatened earlier this week that they may go on strike on Saturday to protest against the new computerized scheduling system introduced at Malad depot from Saturday.
But following the high court directive on Friday evening, workers turned up in full attendance on Saturday at all the depots and began plying buses. The court has asked BEST unions/workers to allow functioning of the new rota system on an experimental basis till April 16.
"We have scheduled 3,964 buses for operations during the morning peak hours. We are confident of running all the buses. Commuters will not be inconvenienced as there is no strike today," said BEST senior spokesperson A S Tamboli.
Till 6 am, the BEST operated 21 buses from Malad, 27 from Malvani depot and 37 buses on various routes from Goregaon depots, sources said.
BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said that the transport body had legal sanctions to run the new rota system. "We will operate at Malad depot from today and will implement this system at all the 25 other depots from June 1,'' he added.
