BEST flash strike: GM threatens punitive action against drivers, conductors

MUMBAI: BEST strike continues in the city, inconveniencing lakhs of citizens. Autos and taxi drivers are making brisk business though there is a shortage of taxis in south Mumbai and many have to prefer walking to the nearest railway station for transport.

BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta has appealed workers to join duty by evening, else there could be punitive action.

"Those who join duties by evening will be spared of departmental action," he said.

BEST workers' union leader Sharad Rao, who held a press conference this afternoon, said the strike will "continue" as workers are upset with the management and are opposed to the new computerized scheduling system. He said other unions, including those in BMC and autorickshaws, may support the stir from Wednesday. He said that a meeting of workers will be organized at a city maidan in the evening where the issue will be further discussed.

Denying that he has called for a strike, Rao said it was a decision taken by the workers themselves. "The workers, especially drivers and conductors, have been harassed by superiors at the 25 bus depots since March 29, when the court gave permission to BEST to implement the proposed scheduling system. While one of the workers, who was threatened that he may lose his job if he did not sign the new schedule card, suffered a heart attack, a few others also had mental trauma and one even fainted. This led to mass protest and workers have gone on mass leave," he said.

Rao alleged that BEST general manager had taken advantage of poll code of conduct to implement the new scheme. "He knows very well that there cannot be any political interference in stopping the scheme to be implemented from April 1. But the workers have given him a befitting reply by bunking duty," he stated.

He admitted that he was called for talks on Tuesday morning. "But the GM did not sound positive. Also, he was arrogant when he said that if I did not come for talks, he would meet the other unions," he alleged. The stalemate continues and Mumbaikars continue to suffer due to absence of 4,200 buses on roads in the afternoon as well.
