BEST driver hurt in stone pelting at Charkop

MUMBAI: A BEST bus driver was injured after two miscreants pelted stones at a bus at Charkop on Tuesday morning. The Charkop police have registered an offence and are looking for the culprits. BEST workers took a spontaneous call to go on strike on Tuesday morning.

BEST bus number 276 was plying in Kandivali West on Tuesday when the incident occurred. The bus was moving from the bus-stand towards Charkop's sector 8 area. Two unknown men, on a motorcycle, flung a stone on the front pane of the vehicle, shattering the glass. The driver was injured on the right side of his forehead. He was rushed to the hospital by the police.

Assistant commissioner, Malwani division, visited the spot. "We will be providing protection to other buses plying on the road," said zonal DCP B Rajput. Unions had raised objections to the new spread-over duties in the computerized scheduling system, where drivers have to work for 12 to 13 hours. Also, any bus can be allotted to any driver unlike the earlier manual system where routes were fixed for drivers. "Some buses have started operating as per the new plan; bus no. 276 that was targetted on Tuesday was one of them," added Rajput. "The bus was not damaged by the public, as reported by some media."
