Sources said that the innovative idea was proposed by joint commissioner of police (crime) Sadanand Date. Date said, "The idea is to improve the conviction rate in the city. The best conviction reward will help improve the conviction rate and the other officers will take inspiration. The Shakti Mills gang-rape case is like a case study."
In 90s the former director general of police Suryakant Jog had started the best detection award in memory of his son Deepak Jog who died while serving as a deputy police commissioner. However soon the department made it official and started awarding best detection award to officers to honour hardworking and brave officers.
Sources said that senior officials plan to issue a certificate as well cash reward to all the 50 officers, part of the Shakti Mill case probe team. Home Minister RR Patil will soon be honouring the teams. The crime branch teams consists of senior inspector Arvind Sawant, Inspector Prashant Raje, Gulabroa More, investigating officer Manohar Dhanawade and N Nikumbe. The teams were headed by assistant commissioner of police Yashwant Vatkar.
Former joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy who supervised the probes said, "It was a joint effort by the crime branch, Agripada police, N M Joshi marg and all officers have put in remarkable efforts without expecting any rewards. I also give the credit to the FSL all its efforts for giving reports on time and the court for the wonderful judgement. This judgement sends a strong signal to potential sexual offenders and reiterates Mumbai's position as the safest city in India for women."
