Illegal extension of eatery razed

MUMBAI: The BMC on Wednesday demolished the illegal extensions built by sea food joint Gajalee at Vile Parle (E).

A front canopy and two sheds at the rear of the eatery were demolished by the civic machinery, following orders by the civic body's grievance redressal committee (GRC) on illegal constructions . The demolition was conducted in the presence of over 15 BMC employees and police bandobast.

According to civic officials , following a Supreme Court direction that the GRC should hear the case and decide the course of action, the committee last week ordered that the BMC demolish the illegal canopy put up by the hotel. But the hotel management approached the city civic court challenging the GRC's order. After the court upheld the GRC order , the BMC undertook the demolition.

The food joint had earlier approached the BMC, seeking permission to regularize the canopy at its entrance that was put up 12 years ago. The restaurateurs stated that the canopy was put up to keep out stuff carelessly tossed out by people from their homes located on the upper floors of the building.

The BMC had turned down Gajalee's plea and said that the canopy be pulled down. The eatery then approached the HC.

In February this year, the court stopped the demolition order and asked the eatery and the housing society to iron out the matter. But the attempt failed and the HC, in December 2013, ordered the BMC to raze the structure, which was contested by the hotel owners in the Supreme Court.
