This is the second time in a week that a fire in the vicinity of the suburban railway tracks had affected the services. On February 23, a huge blaze at the Ceat tyre factory led to the evacuation of the nearby Nahur station, and the slow train services were stopped for nearly five hours. Also, the overhead wires were shut at Nahur and the services were restored only late in the night.
In the GTB Nagar incident, a senior CR official told TOI— "There was lot of panic as there were reports of fire at the station. But the fire did not occur on the platform on in the station premises. It happened outside the station and close to the tracks. As it could have been a risk allowing services to operate, we decided to shut down the overhead equipment (OHE) and carry out a block between Wadala and Kurla station for nearly half an hour."
Sources said that two fire engines were deployed and the fire was douzed by 12.15 pm, when the train services were restored. However, commuters complained of delays because there was also a megablock between Panvel and Nerul and therefore the frequency of train services was poor.
"It was difficult getting a train for more than half an hour and many commuters preferred to catch BEST buses and taxis to reach their destination," said an office-goer on Sunday.
