Court issues summons to Manish Tewari

MUMBAI: Esplanade court on Friday issued summons to Union minister Manish Tewari on after taking cognizance of a criminal defamation case filed against him by former national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) Nitin Gadkari.

Gadkari had last month filed a criminal defamation complaint alleging that as a Congress spokesperson Tewari had three years ago made libelous statements. Gadkari's counsel Rameshwar Gite in his submissions before S S Gulhane the eighth additional metropolitan magistrate at Esplanade court said Tewari faced with "uncomfortable questions over Adarsh housing society scam, made false allegations that Gadkari held benami flat in the society." He made these false statements "only to divert media attention".

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Gulhane issued process in the case and will now hear the matter on April 7. He issued summons to Tewari to attend court on that date.

Gadkari's criminal complaint took exception to quotes appearing in the media in November 2010 attributed to Tewari about Gadkari's alleged connection to Adarsh.
