Members of the War Wounded Foundation choose to "live life to the fullest" and emphasizing that their disability does not mark the end of their existence. It is this message that the group plans to spread when they participate in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2014.
"Most soldiers come from remote parts of the country. Once they are injured in war and they have to return home and tend to live the life of a reclusive lives. We want to change this mindset for the soldiers who retire after being injured," said Colonel Gulshan Kumar from the War Wounded Foundation.
The foundation was registered as a charitable NGO in 2002 and aims to create avenues to make war disabled personnel of the Indian army, navy and air force financially independent.
For many years, the NGO has managed to find employment for disabled soldiers and help them sustain their families but now, they NGO plans to take this a step further. "We have shifted our focus from simply offering a job in the city to equipping them with skills that can enable them to create employment opportunities in their hometowns and live with their families while they work," added Kumar. With the help of corporate groups, the NGO is trying to impart computer skills and teach English to soldiers in order to help them.
With this aim, 15 members of the War Wounded Foundation will be participating in the marathon's dream run for a third consecutive time. The participants had lost their limbs during service. "We look forward to a warm welcome and a beautiful run for a cause," added Kumar.
The team will be headed by Lieutenant-General Vivek Oberoi who lost a limb in the 1965 war.
