Snakes simply love ITI campus in Belapur

MUMBAI: On Thursday evening, as a regular training workshop for mechanical fitters was on at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Belapur, a baby Russel's viper quietly crept inside the class from the window.

Surely, the two-and-half feet long viper was not interested in learning of skills of a fitter, but came indoors probably just to escape the winter chill outside. Its presence, though, created quite a ruckus and the class abruptly ended. This is the second snake to be spotted and rescued from the ITI campus in the New Year. Two days back, a huge 8 footer Indian rock python was rescued from the vast and verdant college campus.

``The python was the biggest snake to be seen in our campus, which was established here in 1980 and has a lot of greenery and trees. Every time a snake is spotted here, we immediately call up animal activists to take them away and release at an isolated place,'' said the ITI principal, Sanjay Sadamate.

Belapur based activists, Madhav Gaikwad and Pritam Bhusane told TOI that the latest two snakes rescued from ITI have now been safely released in the wild. ``There is a thick green cover in and around the ITI campus. We have urged the teachers and students to stay alert and also regularly trim the lawns and hedges, as this discourages the presence of reptiles,'' said Gaikwad.
With regards to the Russel's viper entering the class, Gaikwad added that it was fortunate that all the 27 students and the teacher immediately evacuated the room, since even a baby viper's bite can be potent.
Last year, around eight venomous and non-venomous snakes (including cobras) were rescued from ITI.
Some of the ITI students said that at times the snakes from the neighbouring Urban Haat area come to their campus while chasing rats and other small prey. However, thanks to widespread awareness, the students said that they do not fear snakes as they know that these are shy creatures which only attack when provoked.
