High court declines to stay Mumbai varsity elections

MUMBAI: Bombay high court has declined to stay elections to Mumbai University's students council elections to be held on January 15, 2014. University assured the court that adequate police protection will be provided during the election process.

A division bench of Justice S J Vazifdar and Justice Gautam Patel heard petition by advocate Manoj Tekede challenging the politicisation of the elections to the post of president and secretary from among 14 eligible candidates. His advocate Samata Kakade argued that representatives of Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena and National Students' Union of India were present during scrutiny of candidates at the Fort campus. She said candidates were being threatened by members of political parties and no action was taken despite complaints to the vice-chancellor.

University's advocate Rui Rodrigues said under the statute, every candidate at the stage of scrutiny is allowed to have a representative and nothing can be done if arepresentative is affiliated politically. The judges agreed with him but said any person who is pressurised during election process must be given protection . Rodrigues said,``Adequate police protection is always provided and will be provided at the time of election. '' Recording his statement, the judges directed MNVS and NSUI to be added as parties and posted the next hearing on January 16, 2014 to ``see what happens.''
