According to TV reports, during the protest, a minor scuffle broke out between the protestors and the police.
Earlier, Nirupam had also threatened an indefinite fast.
In a letter to Reliance Energy CMD Anil Ambani, a copy of which was circulated to mediapersons on Sunday, Nirupam said, "The common man is unable to make ends meet due to the high cost of living in Mumbai, and the government and corporate sector must provide relief in power tariff, which has been hiked several times in the past few years.
"Though the Electricity Act 2003 provides for certain charges like fixed charge and regulatory asset charge, the discoms must withdraw these charges as they are redundant and not justified," he said.
The letter stated, "As the CMD of Reliance Energy, you (Ambani) are requested to be present at our morcha and address the public on your company's position vis-a-vis our demands and expectations. We expect you to scrap the hefty charges, failing which we will intensify our agitation and may even resort to an indefinite fast."
The demands include scrapping the fixed charge of Rs 100 per bill and regulatory asset charge of Rs 600 for consumption of over 500 units towards infrastructure, and replacement of defective electronic meters imported from China.
An activist said it was "strange" that Nirupam had woken up and was seeking a subsidy when the demand to roll back the regulatory asset charge and other charges was made by consumer groups in the past.
