Mobile app to help you get ST details, book seats

MUMBAI: The MSRTC is going hi-tech as it plans to introduce a new mobile app for passengers, set up a dedicated 24x7 call centre helpline , have GPS/GPRS and Wi-Fi facilities on buses and digital-display indicators, mentioning real-time arrival and departure of its buses . To ensure women's safety, the corporation is also exploring the possibility of installing CCTV cameras on all its buses.

MSRTC managing director Vikas Kharage said the mobile app would help commuters get details on the routes of buses and their fares, and also help them book seats online. "We plan to link the mobile app to other applications such as the Google Map. Anyone can locate a bus station and get a bus's arrival and departure schedule real time," he said. About GPS/GPRS, Kharage said the system would be introduced on all buses gradually. "At present, the facility is available on AC and 200 semi-luxury buses," he said.

The call centre helpline will be for both passengers and drivers/conductors. "A commuter can call on the dedicated helpline for lodging complaints or making suggestions to improve the system. Drivers and conductors may also call on the same helpline in case of mishaps or untoward incidents during a journey," Kharage said.

The transport corporation's chairman, Jeevan Gore, pointed out that besides e-governance, efforts were also on to ensure punctuality of buses, good behaviour by drivers and conductors and cleanliness at bus stations/depots.

"We are making our conductors the brand ambassador of MSRTC. From Thursday , the moment you step into our bus, (17,000 in the fleet), you will be greeted with a polite namaste and the conductor will first inform all passengers about the routes, the scheduled halts, the fares, the reserved seats for women and the safety instructions," Gore said at a press conference on Wednesday. He added there were plans to introduce an online system for booking monthly passes.

The possibility of having a catering service on board Mumbai-Pune Shivneri Volvos is also being considered.
