Gold worth Rs 67 lakh seized from 4 passengers at Mumbai airport

MUMBAI: The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department recovered undeclared gold collectively worth Rs 67 lakh from four passengers in separate cases at the city international airport, officials said on Sunday.

Customs officials intercepted four passengers between last night and this morning at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in the city and recovered the gold.

In the first case, Abdul Bawa Fakir Apkar, who arrived from Riyadh, had concealed four gold biscuits weighing 466 grams worth Rs 11.50 lakh in his underwear, officials said.

In the second case, Mohammed Sharif Jafar Bapu, who arrived from Dubai, was caught carrying five gold biscuits weighing 583.2 grams valuing 14.37 lakh inside the waist portion of his jeans pant, they said.

A gold chain of 304 grams worth Rs 7 lakh was recovered from another passenger identified as Sayed Mozim Raza, who had come from Bangkok.

The officials recovered 12 gold bars weighing 1,399 grams worth Rs 34.15 lakh from one Alibabu Abdul Mateen Mohiddin. He is a resident of Karnataka, who had arrived from Saudi Arabia. The accused had concealed gold in a specially stitched pocket in his pants.
