MUMBAI: A youth aged about 20 years lost his life while a teenager is battling for survival after they fell off a crowded Virar-bound local on Tuesday morning.

Government Railway Police (GRP) officials are investigating if the duo was performing stunts standing on the footboard. They are also trying to get witnesses to the incident.

Pre-daybreak trains are generally crowded on Tuesdays with devotees returning from Siddhivinayak temple in Prabhadevi. The incident took place around 4.30am between Bandra and Khar stations.

While the deceased is still to be identified, the survivor's name was given as Altaaf Shaikh (19). "Both have sustained head injuries. There's a possibility that they were hanging out and banged their heads against a railway pole. The station master informed us about them, following which we found the two on the tracks between two poles," a GRP official said, adding, "They were bleeding and we rushed them to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra."

A doctor said Shaikh has been admitted to the ICCU, where he is unconscious. "He was on the ventilator for a while. His condition remains critical. His family tracked him down to the hospital and they are in a state of shock," the doctor added.

There is no CCTV coverage of the spot where the youths fell. "There were 40-50 people at the railway station and there's a possibility that someone knew the two. But nobody has come forward to identify them," said an official. The deceased is around 5.7 feet tall and dressed in a green shirt and red jeans. Officials said Shaikh had the words 'PV' and 'Love Pooja' tattooed on his arm. The Bandra GRP have recorded a case of accidental death.

The GRP has conducted numerous drives on pre-daybreak trains after receiving complaints about commuters performing stunts, hitting passengers and cops on platforms or robbing people inside compartments. "The offenders caught so far have been residents of north Mumbai and the extended suburbs. They reach the temple by midnight before returning to Dadar or Elphinstone Road station and camp there till 4am when services start for the day," said an official.
