MUMBAI: Over 300 students from across city colleges carried out a rally in south Mumbai on Monday to mark the first anniversary of the brutal gang-rape of girl in Delhi. The RISE campaign was organised by students from the National Social Service units of the colleges and the NGO, Men Against Violence and Abuse (MAVA), to create awareness among the general public.

The students staged street play 'De Dhakka' at five locations. The play was collectively scripted by college students and covered the various forms of violence against girls. "We distributed pamphlets with messages for the general public and put up posters too. The students were made to take a pledge - different for girls and boys," said a BMS student, Tushar Warang. The rally started from Sant Gadge Maharaj College in Grant Road and ended at the Grant Road railway station.

The Mumbai University published a book, 'Nirbhaya - Ek Atmachintan' to mark the day. The book's prologue is written by Justice Chandrashekhar Dharamadhikari and is edited by the vice-chancellor of the university, Rajan Welukar. Several notable writers and thinkers, such as, Nirja Dhulekar, Kumar Ketkar, Asha Bage, Vijaya Wad, Judge Mrudula Bhatkar, etc have contributed to the book. The topics that these writers have covered include women empowerment in the fields of economic, social and political spheres, the rights which are given to them and their safety.
