MUMBAI: A police sub inspector attached to Juhu police station was caught by the Anti Corruption Bureau for accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a taxi driver on Friday afternoon.
The ACB have booked sub inspector Mithun Sawant under the prevention of corruption act and produced him before the special ACB court which remanded him to police custody. The complaint in the case was filed by a taxi driver who was caught under violation of traffic rule. The traffic police caught him and seized his taxi and handed over the investigations to Juhu police station.Sub inspector Sawant who was probing the case demanded a sum of Rs 30,000 to release him and his taxi. Taxi driver pleaded that he did not have that much amount to pay and handed Rs 2,000 to Sawant. Court released driver. On December 16 when driver approached Sawant for release of his taxi, Sawant demanded Rs 10,000 and agreed for Rs 8,000. Driver who did not wish to pay bribe approached ACB and lodged a complaint.
The ACB officials verified the demand. On Friday morning Sawant asked the driver to hand over the money to his friend Prakash Kalegowda. No sooner did Kalegowda accepted the money, ACB caught Kalegowda as well Sawant from Juhu police station.
