MUMBAI: The Central Railway was forced to call off its megablocks on Sunday to ensure that followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar, who are camping in the city, are not inconvenienced and they can return back to their hometowns by evening. The Western Railway too called off its jumbo block at the eleventh hour on Saturday.
A CR source said that the megablocks were a routine feature on Sunday, and was carried out in the suburban sections between CST and Kalyan and CST and Panvel almost every weekend. However, citizens have heaved a sigh of relief as there will be no rail blocks on the Main/Harbour lines this Sunday and trains will run as per the timetable.
The WR had earlier planned a jumbo block on the Up and Down fast lines between Santacruz and Mahim stations from 10.35 am to 3.35 pm on Sunday. But in a press statement on Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson from WR said that "there will be no rail blocks on Sunday."
Meanwhile, the CR will carry out a special night traffic and power block between Kurla and Sion from 1 am to 4.30 am, when the suburban train services will not be hit.
