MUMBAI: Tata Power has conducted more than 100 energy audits under 'My Mumbai, Green Mumbai' campaign, thereby ensuring that industrial and commercial consumers in the city save 18 million units of electricity. This is one of the big steps in energy conservation for city, Tata officials said on Friday.

A senior official said, "Tata Power continues to undertake various initiatives to reinforce its philosophy on energy conservation. It has conducted special 'energy audits' targeting industrial and commercial consumers in the city and the exercise helped these customers save in excess of 18 million units."

This has apparently helped meet Mumbai's ever growing need for reliable power, officials said. Tata Power has been running this programme for more than three years to support the consumers by offering the services at highly subsidized costs.

Under the program, customer's premise is audited by a certified energy audit agency and recommendations are provided by the energy auditors for achieving further reduction in energy consumption. Tata Power has so far carried out these audits for over 100 consumers and cumulatively provided recommendations for the reduction of over 18 million units in the past three years.

S Padmanabhan, executive director (Operations), said that, "The energy audit initiative has received good response from all consumers who have availed of them. It has also developed awareness in the commercial and industrial sector about the requirement of such audit with scientific analysis of load profile. Initiating these audits helps in better management of resources and increasing profitability. We are happy to offer such innovative and attractive schemes for all our customer segments. We are confident that our demand side efforts will not only help our customers to significantly reduce their monthly bills but enable them to make Mumbai a greener city."

Major consumers such as M&M, American School, SBI, Tata Communication, Goregaon Sports club, JP Morgan, and many more have availed of these energy audits, sources said.

Among others are small and medium establishments such as malls, offices and factories that have reduced their energy consumption by over 10 to 15% since the audits have been conducted in their premises.

Energy audit is a program that determines inefficiencies in equipments/appliances/unit operations to establish a complete energy balance of the system. The results of the audit help to introduce cost-effective energy measures into operations. It is generally observed that commercial and industrial sector can save 5-15% energy after implementing the recommendations of the audit.

These audits are conducted by professional and specialist energy auditors accredited by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which enables consumers to undertake a studied approach towards energy saving by mapping their unique power consumption pattern and identify several opportunities to save energy.
