MUMBAI: A day after the Shiv Sena, the ruling party in the civic body said that they will step forward and convert INS Vikrant into a museum, MNS group leader said that the BMC shouldn't get into it and that the state government should take the initiative.
Sandip Deshpande said that the BMC should focus on the basic civic amenities to be given to the city and should let the state government convert the ship into a museum.
The Defence Ministry has initiated the process to auction the decommissioned ship after the Maharashtra government had expressed its inability to maintain the ship. Since then the demand is on rise from several quarters to convert the warship into a floating museum.
Shiv Sena, the ruling party in the BMC, has taken upon the mantle to preserve the ship as a museum. Civic standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said the civic body will try to procure INS Vikrant to set up a museum on it.
The BMC in its annual budget has been allotting Rs 25 crore since last four years for the maintenance of INS Vikrant. "However, the amount lapsed as it was not handed over to the Navy. Had it been properly used, there was no need to auction for scrapping," said Mr Shewale.
INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy was commissioned in 1961 and after a distinguished service, it was decommissioned in January 1997. Since then there have been several attempts to convert it into a wartime memorial, but could not materialize due to various problems.
