Civic clerk caught taking bribe for marriage registration

MUMBAI: A woman clerk of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been arrested by the Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from a lawyer on Monday evening.

Alka Patil (39) who works as a clerk in the marriage registration department had allegedly demanded the cash from the complainant Madhumati Kabra. The complainant, an advocate, had in mid November approached Patil for a marriage registration certificate for her client.

Patil, who is also a Balwadi teacher, demanded the cash saying that Kabra would be collecting a fee from her client. Patil had found out that Kabra would be charging Rs 4,000 from her client for getting the marriage registration done.

While Patil promised to issue the certificate by December 5, she kept delaying it. Kabra then approached the ACB.

The Thane ACB laid a trap at the ward office at around 5.30 pm, where she was caught red-handed accepting the cash on Monday. She will be produced in court today.
