The structures that have been declared dangerous are Mandvi, Indira Dock, Deonar and Marol fire stations besides Byculla staff quarters and a part of the Dharavi fire station. The shifting of these fire stations will increase the response time— the time fire brigade personnel take to reach a spot in case of an incident.
Incidentally, 10 families of the firemen living in Mandvi complex were already moved to Indira Dock after it was declared dilapidated. Now they have to move out from Indira Dock as well.
After the Dockyard Road building collapse that killed 61 people, the BMC has started undertaking fresh structural audits of all its buildings that are more than 30 years old. This makes 21 fire stations out of 33 eligible for the audits.
Byculla and Mandvi fire stations have already been evacuated. Now 83 families living in the staff quarters in Marol will be shifted to Borivli and Mankhurd.
While both Mandvi and Indira Dock fire stations have been completely shut and the offices will be relocated to Byculla, the families from the residential quarters have been shifted to nearby fire stations.
"We are facing stiff opposition from our own firemen as most of them are reluctant to shift. But there is very little that we can do. We have no option but to relocate them," said a senior fire official.
"Structural audits of the other fire stations will also be completed soon," the official added.
