MUMBAI: The city crime branch on Monday invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) in two cases - the extortion threat to MNS legislator of Vikhroli Mangesh Sangle while the other pertains to firing on former bookie-turned-builder Ajay Gosalia alias Ajay Ganda on Malad Link Road recently.
The police on Monday produced all the five accused arrested in the Gosalia firing case before the MCOCA court and got their remand extended. The accused are Kaushik Gaur, Abhay Shinde, Rajendra Singh, Rohit Vishwakarma and Sunil alias Piyush Tiwari.
Ramdas Rahane, a key member of the Kumar Pillai gang — who was arrested along with two others for issuing extortion threats to Sangle — told the police that they were on the payroll of two prominent builders. The police are now verifying these claims. Rahane reportedly revealed that the two builders paid them monthly haftas and used them to intimidate their businesses rivals.
Rahane is a former confidante of Anees Ibrahim and was involved in the 2011 firing on Manish Dholakia's office at Marine Drive. He is the brother of Dashrath Rahane of the Amar Naik gang, who was killed in 90's. Rahane has seven serious offences registered against him, including cases of firing on director-producer Rajiv Rai in1997 and on builder Omprakash Kukreja in 1995.
Last month the police had arrested Kiran Dhanawade (35) from Thakurdwar in south Mumbai who impersonated as Kailash Sawant and went to Sangle's residence in Vikhroli and forcibly handed over his cellphone and connected the line to his mentor. Pillai who was on the line demanded Rs 25 lakh from him. Later the police arrested Dhanawade, Rahane and Vinod Damodar alias Sai in the case.
