MUMBAI: The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has sought approval from the state government to set up an Anti Retroviral Test (ART) centre for HIV positive patients.

Statistics available with the civic administration shows the Mira-Bhayander region has 400 HIV positive patients. The number of HIV patients from Naigaon to Dahanu is 1,000. As of now, patients have to travel to ART centres in Dahanu and Talasari for treatment on a monthly basis. In Mumbai, ART centre has been set up at Siddharth hospital in Goregaon.

The ART helps in keeping the number of HIV viruses in the blood to undetectable levels, thereby stopping the deadly assault of HIV virus on the immune system of the patient.

At present, three or more ARV drugs are recommended worldwide for the treatment of people with HIV infection. As long as the HIV positive individual takes the medication on a regular basis he/she retains close-to-normal quality of life including working capacity. This has resulted in a dramatic decline in opportunistic infections (OI) and HIV-related deaths.

The MBMC plans to open the ART centre at their municipal hospital in Mira Road. The centre will start after receiving approval from the state.

HIV patients have to visit ART centres every month for the free treatment. Many stay away as they find travelling to the centres expensive.
