MUMBAI: The civic standing committee on Wednesday cleared a proposal to appoint British Council to train teachers in English language.
The civic body will pay British Council Rs 3.5 crore for this exercise.
Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said that it was a good proposal and will help the teachers teach the children better.
According to the civic officials, English language training programme will be implemented phasewise. In the initial phase, 30 civic teachers will be selected. They will be trained by British Council experts for 60 days this year and another 60 days next year.
Selected master trainers from this first batch will be asked to train other 2400 teachers in English. The civic body has aimed to train 9600 teachers in next five years under this training programme.
"The training by British Council is basically for semi-English pattern, under which subjects like maths and science will be taught in English language after the eighth standard," said Manoj Kotak, chairman of civic education committee.
Amidst the rising clamour for education in English language, the BMC has decided to introduce semi English pattern in its civic schools. The civic body has planned to start this pattern in 250 classes of 177 schools by next year.
Civic officials say, all are making a beeline for English medium schools, due to which the number of English students was on rise. The number of students going to English medium schools in 2007 was 21,899. However, by 2012 it has risen to 52384.
The BMC's decision to start civic English medium schools, called Mumbai Public Schools, has also paid rich dividends by the huge response. The civic body has planned to start 84 English civic schools in the city.
