MUMBAI: Bombay high court has directed state government to ensure that fares of private ambulances are fixed by October 31, 2013 while hearing a public interest litigation saying indiscriminate fares were hurting the consumers.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha on August 29, 2013 heard a PIL by Nainesh Dolas urging direction to the authorities to fix a fare/rates of the ambulance which are not covered under the Public Health Department or attached to government hospital under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
An affidavit dated July 25, 2013 by, Laxman Khade, deputy transport commissioner, informed the court that the Transportation Commissioner on July 19, 2011 has directed regional transport officers and deputy regional transport officers to have the fares/rates fixed by their respective regional Transport authorities for ambulance as per the Act. Further, that in view of the above instruction, the regional transport officer/deputy transport officer of 18 regions have already fixed fares/rates in their respective regions and the remaining areas/regions will fix a fare/rate for ambulance as early as possible and by October 31, 2013.
Disposing of the PIL, the judges recorded the statement and directed the transport commissioner to ensure that the fares/rates will be fixed by October 31, 2013.
