Bombay HC to hear PIL on power thefts during festivals

MUMBAI: Bombay high court will on Tuesday hear a public interest litigation for curbing electricity thefts by mandals during the Ganesh and Navratri festivals.

The PIL filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar will come up for hearing before a division bench of Justice P V Hardas and Justice Revati Mohite-Dere. In his petition, Tirodkar has urgedthe court to direct the special cell, formed to detect and prevent theft of electricity, to carry out physical checks of Ganesh and Navratri mandals. Ganesh festival commences on September 9, 2013.

Tirodkar's petition said during the hearing of a PIL in 2010 on electricity theft for the benefit of hawkers, the HC was informed that a special cell was being formed by the BEST and police to check, prevent and detect power-thefts in Mumbai. "This team can be enforced which was formed for checking electricity thefts by hawkers can be enforced even for commonman," said Tirodkar.

Prosecutor Aruna Pai said BMC, MSEB and BMC were parties to the 2010 PIL and it is necessary that they should also be impleaded in this PIL. The judges issued the notices to them and posted and adjourned the hearing.
